Ajuga reptans, commonly known as common bugle, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial with glossy, dark green to bronze-tinged leaves that spread by creeping runners. In spring and early summer, it produces dense spikes of rich blue flowers that rise just above the foliage, creating a strong carpet of colour close to the ground.
The flowers are an important early nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects, giving this plant clear ecological value. Its spreading habit makes it particularly useful for ground cover in borders, woodland edges, and shaded areas, where it can help suppress weeds while providing seasonal interest.
