Product Details

Jean Patou Collection Héritage Que Sais-Je? Eau de Parfum 100ml is a 2014 reinterpretation of one of Jean Patou's earliest fragrances — a 1925 perfume by Henri Almeras that is often credited as one of the first true gourmand compositions. Reworked by in-house perfumer Thomas Fontaine, this Heritage version retains the spirit of the original: sweet peach, bergamot and petitgrain at the top, a soft heart of rose, carnation and jasmine, and a quiet drydown of patchouli and amber. Polished, retro-elegant and unapologetically French.

About Jean Patou

Jean Patou opened his Parisian couture house in 1914 and is often credited as the inventor of designer sportswear, alongside contemporaries Coco Chanel and Madeleine Vionnet. His 1925 perfume trio — Amour Amour, Que Sais-Je? and Adieu Sagesse — represented the "three stages of love" (the falling, the doubting, the parting), and was launched on the same day as Guerlain's Shalimar at the Paris Exposition of Decorative Arts. The Collection Héritage line, launched in 2014 under perfumer Thomas Fontaine, returned the brand's archive perfumes to production.

Fragrance notes

  • Top: Peach, Petitgrain, Bergamot

  • Base: Patchouli, Amber

Olfactory family: Floral Fruity Chypre  |  Original launch: 1925  |  Current formulation: 2014, Thomas Fontaine

The story behind Que Sais-Je?

The phrase "Que sais-je?" — "What do I know?" — is borrowed from Montaigne's Essais and was chosen by Patou to represent the second stage of love: the doubt. Almeras's original was a soft, brunette counterpart to the redhead Amour Amour and the blonde Adieu Sagesse, with peach and honey notes that nudged the fragrance into early gourmand territory before the term existed. Thomas Fontaine's Heritage reformulation honours that mood with cleaner top notes and a contemporary chypre underpinning.

Who it's for

Que Sais-Je? suits women drawn to vintage-style perfumery — wearers of Mitsouko, Femme Rochas, or other early 20th-century fruit-floral chypres — who appreciate retro elegance over current sweet-floral conventions. Best in autumn and cooler spring days; ideal for office, dinner and quietly grown-up occasions. A natural fit for anyone building a fragrance wardrobe rooted in history rather than trend.

How to wear it

  1. Spray onto pulse points — wrists, base of the throat, behind the ears — from around 15cm.
  2. Two to three sprays for daytime; build up gently for evening wear.
  3. Apply over an unscented body lotion to extend the soft amber-patchouli drydown.
