Juncus ensifolius, commonly known as swordleaf rush, is a clump-forming perennial with upright, narrow, bright green leaves forming dense tussocks. In summer it produces small, inconspicuous brownish-green flowers along the stems, adding subtle texture rather than showy blooms.
This species is valuable for wetland biodiversity, providing cover for small wildlife and stabilising pond edges and damp soils. Its upright, clump-forming habit and tolerance of waterlogged or consistently moist conditions make it ideal for pond margins, wet meadows, and naturalistic water gardens.
