Mentha aquatica, commonly known as water mint, is a vigorous, spreading perennial with aromatic, green, serrated leaves forming dense clumps. In mid to late summer it produces spikes of small, tubular lilac-purple flowers, creating a colourful and fragrant display along pond margins and in damp soils.
This species is valuable for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, supporting wetland biodiversity. Its spreading habit and tolerance of consistently moist or shallowly submerged soil make it ideal for pond edges, wetlands, and naturalistic water gardens.
