Mentha pulegium, commonly known as pennyroyal, is a low-growing, spreading perennial with aromatic, dark green, oval-shaped leaves forming dense mats. In mid to late summer it produces small, lilac-purple flowers in clusters along the stems, creating subtle colour and fragrance in damp soils and along pond margins.
This species is valuable for pollinators and helps stabilise wet soils. Its spreading habit and tolerance of consistently moist or shallowly submerged soil make it ideal for pond edges, wet meadows, and naturalistic water gardens.
